Yes, it is possible.
First of all I`d like to say that you can install new Instrument Cluster (IC) into you MK3 without any adapter. It will start to work at the same moment. But what you need to do is:
save you ASBUILT data to file (before installing new IC)
write down or remember ODOMETER data
INSTALL new IC
Read saved ASBUILT data
Write Asbuilt data into the car
Change IC type to correct one
Write Asbuilt data again
change ODOMETER data (if you want you saved milage)
clear faults

As background information, I replaced the level 1 instrument panel with a Level 3 instrument panel and it works,
I have also updated the software for it, no problems. I was just wondering what that information should be changed to?
